The inland long distance freight transport is mostly ensured by road and mainly on highways and motorways. Important challenges are addressed:
- managing an increasing number and flow of heavy vehicles on existing infrastructure,
- extending the lifetime of ageing road infrastructure exposed to longer and heavier trucks,
- greening, reducing GNG emissions and fossil fuel dependency,
- financing the maintenance and operation of the infrastructure and collecting the fair price for the infrastructure use.
ITS solutions are combined to resolve these challenges. They include smart infrastructure, access programs, high capacity vehicles, advanced heavy traffic monitoring and direct enforcement, routing and monitoring of connected vehicles, electric road systems, free flow tolling and tax per kilometer. Infrastructure and fleet managers, carriers and regulatory bodies are the main stakeholders, which need to build together and implement these solutions.
A feedback of the best practices in Europe, North America and Asia are reported, and the panel discussion identified the most promising ways and solutions for the near future.
